Iguazu Falls, Argentina

Other travelers we've met raved about Iguazu Falls, so it was a must-do for us.

Puerto Iguazu is a small town in the northern tip of Argentina, on the border of Brazil and Paraguay, and serves as a base from which to visit the falls in the Iguazu national park. Getting to Iguazu from Buenos Aires meant another long bus ride, an estimated travel time of 17 hours, which in fact ended up being 22 hours! Did we mention South America is a big place?

Iguazu has a very tropical and somewhat African feel, with the hot, muggy climate, dense vegetation and dusty streets. Our hostel was lovely, with its colonial style building overlooking a beautiful pool set amongst palm trees.

We were eager to get to the falls, so on the first day we caught a local bus into the national park to see what the Argentinian side of the falls had to offer. We were not disappointed. First up was 'Devils Throat', accessed by a small train and walk to the mouth of the falls. It was a wet, exhilarating experiencing as you hang over the edge of this enormous pit of frothing, brown water!

We did two other trails (along with our new found British and Irish friends, Mary and Phil) that provide different perspectives to these many waterfalls. While many photographs attempt to do the falls justice, the experience of being there first hand cannot be traded. The feel of the spray and roar of the water provides perspective to the power and magnitude of this natural marvel. This was like no other falls we have seen!

Feeling well satisfied with the days activities, we ventured in to town to enjoy an Argentinian styled grill with Mary and Phil. We shared a selection of interesting meats, including intestines, kidneys, and black pudding which required a healthy dose of red wine to get down!!

The following day was spent rotting at the pools edge, planning our next leg of the journey and doing some admin. Rested and refueled, we will embark on yet another overnight bus to a beach town in Brazil called Florianopolis today. Sand, sun and sea... it's been way too long!!

Getting soaked!
There were so many butterflies!
